Coaching Philosophy

In many clubs, each player is at the mercy of their individual coach, in regards to that coach's technical training, tactical solutions and coaching experience.  Too often practices are poorly planned, organized, and executed and fail to give each player the chance to reach their full potential.  The South End Jr's have a different philosophy which allows ALL PLAYERS the opportunity to receive the same quality of training from a CADRE of coaches.  We have implemented a MASTER COACH program that will allow ALL PLAYERS and coaches to benefit.  The Master Coach/CADRE System will ensure all players are benefiting from the years of experience from EACH coach.  The FULL SEASON will be planned out, with the practice sessions planned in single week blocks to assure quality and balanced training.  The CADRE of coaches will implement the practice plan.

Each player / team will HAVE their own FULL TIME COACH FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON.  But all the coaches will work together in the planning and conducting of the instructional sessions.

Individual Player Emphasis

It is easy for players and parents to get caught up in trying to find the best team to play on or the best players to play with.  We feel this is a big mistake and is the downfall of many young volleyball athletes.  In the search to play on the best team, players often overlook the most important element of long term growth in the sport of volleyball which is the training and development of individual skills.  At the South End Volleyball Club our focus for young athletes is on individual, rather than team development.  We feel that developing players should train more and that being a member of a winning team has little or no relevance to being a successful collegiate playerCollege coaches recruit elite players with elite skills, not elite teams.  Research shows us that young athletes learn easier than older athletes and that individual skills are much easier to teach when young, rather than trying to break bad habits when players are older.  Over the past 25 years, we have developed a systematic approach to training.  It is the key to individual player development.
We do recognize the SPORT OF VOLLEYBALL IS A TEAM SPORT and will not overlook the TEAM aspect of.  However the success of any team is dependent upon how well EACH player can perform the INDIVIDUAL SKILLS.

Player / Mentor Program

Once each Month we will conduct our Player / Mentor program.  The Player  / Mentor program will allow the older players within the club to  help teach the younger players within our club a specific skill.  We have found that the BEST way to LEARN something is to have to TEACH IT.  There are additional benefits to the Player / Mentor program...

Player Evaluations

Players will be given a skills and physical performance evaluation once each month.  Results will be evaluated, compared to previous results, and a summary "player report card" will be sent home to the parents.  To enhance the players performance, the coaches will prepare individual player "plan for improvements" for the following month.  We feel that only through TANGIBLE measurement will we be able to achieve our goals.
